The Medical Herb Garden

About Victoria

The Medical Herb Garden is based at Victoria’s home near St. Andrews, where she grows a wide selection of herbs so that, if they wish, clients can see and get to know many of the herbs that they have been prescribed. This links well with the range of herbs that Victoria uses; many of which are native to Europe and N. America. It also means that the clinic environment is one of care combined with the enthusiasm that being surrounded by herbs brings. The knowledge that she has gained as a veterinary surgeon was enriched when Victoria graduated from the Heartwood professional course. This 3 year full-time course includes 500 clinical hours and led to her completing the Diploma in Herbal Medicine (Distinction) in 2021. This enabled her to become a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH) and be insured with Balens. NIMH is the U.K.’s leading professional body for medical herbalists and members must follow a strict code of practice and commit to continued professional development. As a medical herbalist, she seeks to address the root causes of imbalance within the body and is able to provide a tailor-made treatment program for your unique set of symptoms, using up-to-date clinical research and combining herbs to enhance effectiveness. The huge range of issues which respond well to herbal medicine include: optimising vitality, sleep, skin, arthritis, digestive issues, emotional health, hormone health and auto-immune disorders. She can also assist in making simple, effective and enriching diet and lifestyle changes that will help to support your goals. In addition to consultations Victoria also runs workshops and leads herb walks. These build on the tradition of harvesting and making your own kitchen remedies, which historically was considered as normal as growing your own food. The aim is to empower participants to look after their own health, whilst acknowledging that there will always be times when it is more appropriate to seek mainstream medical advice. Victoria acquired her Level 2 food hygiene certificate and the clinic is HACCP aware.

Consultation

Your 1st consultation usually takes about an hour, but may take a little longer so please allow plenty of time.

I will take a detailed medical history that not only covers your present condition but also brings in your past medical history, family medical history, goes through all the body systems and gives us a chance to look at nutrition and lifestyle. It will also be possible to explore any medication that you are taking to ensure that none of the herbs prescribed will interact with what you are already taking.

Once I have had a chance to collate all this information, I will develop a management plan which will be discussed and agreed with you. I shall then formulate a mix of herbs specific for your needs. This may be in the form of a tincture, tea or topical preparation or may be a combination of these.

A follow-up consultation 3-4 weeks later allows progress to be monitored and further consultations can be arranged if required. These are usually at 3-, 4- or 6-week intervals, as needed.
